How to Increase Windows XP Memory With a Flash Drive

Windows Vista has a feature called ReadyBoost, which allows you to attach a USB flash drive and use it as an additional memory cache. You can also force Windows XP to use the USB stick for its virtual memory instead of using the hard drive. Virtual memory is storage space used on the hard drive when the computer's physical system memory runs out of space. USB flash drives tend to receive and transmit this data a lot faster than a hard drive. However, this procedure will probably not increase performance if you have more than 2GB of physical system memory.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       USB 2.0 flash drive (at least 1GB in size)

·       USB 2.0 port

1.      Step 1

Insert your USB 2.0 flash drive into a USB 2.0 port on your computer. Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties."

2.      Step 2

Click the "Settings" button in the Performance section at the top. Click on the "Advanced" tab.

3.      Step 3

Your flash drive will be labeled according to its manufacturer.

Click the "Change" button toward the bottom of the window. You will see a window containing all the drives attached to your computer. Select your flash drive (which is labeled according to the name of the manufacturer).

4.      Step 4

Click the "System managed size" radio button, then click the "Set" button to confirm your change.

5.      Step 5

Click on your Windows drive in the list at the top of the Window. (It's the one with a "Paging File Size" entry, drive C by default.) Click the "No paging file" radio button. Click the "Set" button, then click the "OK" button and restart your computer for the change to take effect.
