How to Use NAS Storage

NAS can stand for Network Area Storage or Network Attached Storage. NAS is basically a computer that has one or more large drives that can be used for storage by anyone on a network. It's different than a file server because it's less complex and just holds the files for users to access. An NAS can be a computer with large disks, but more often it is an appliance-type computer that focuses just on storage. An NAS appliance will run a common file server protocol so many operating systems can easily access it.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

1.      Step 1

Attach the NAS to your network. You can set it up like a normal computer and use a network cable to attach it to a router that your other computers use. Put it somewhere cool that is easily accessible.

2.      Step 2

Make it available to the network. Once you have the NAS in place go into the network settings and make sure it is in the same work group or domain, and give permissions on all the drives on the NAS to all your computers.

3.      Step 3

Backup files to the NAS. Use backup software and set the drive or one of the drives to the NAS as your backup folder.

4.      Step 4

Save files to the NAS. The primary benefit of the NAS is to share files with others on the network. Simply select the NAS drive or copy and paste files onto the NAS by viewing it in your list of network resources.
