How to Repair the Windows XP Registry

As programs are installed and deleted, program settings are kept in the registry. Some uninstallers do not remove all traces of a program from the registry. This can cause clutter and sometimes errors. Luckily, there are plenty of free registry cleaning utilities available, such as Window Registry Repair 2.0.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

1.      Step 1

Download and launch Window Registry Repair 2.0.

2.      Step 2

    Click the "Options" tab.

3.      Step 3

Add a check next to the "Create a system restore point before repairing errors" box. The registry is a very delicate part of the operating system. Some errors can cause unrepairable damage, so it is highly recommended that you make restore points before you make any changes. Click "OK."

4.      Step 4

Close all other active programs, including Internet browsers and IM clients.

5.      Step 5

Click the "Full Scan" button. This will repair the entire registry.

6.      Step 6

Read the text log that is presented once the scan is complete. It will let you know of any errors that were corrected in the process.
