Take a Screen Shot on Any Computer

The need to take a screen shot of your computer screen may arise for a number of different reasons. You may want to document a technical issue or bug that you are experiencing, you may want an additional type of receipt or proof of purchase, or you may want to preserve a memory or event that occurs only once, such as your name appearing on an important website, in a news story, or as the winner of a contest. The steps below will show you how to take a screen shot using a mac, on a PC, and using Windows Vista.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       One of the three computer platforms mentioned in the introduction

1.      Step 1

On a Mac computer, press the "command," "shift," and "4" buttons simultaneously. The mouse "arrow" will turn into a bulls eye/target icon. Simply click and drag a box around whatever you would like to take a screen shot of. The image will save to your desktop and will be titled, "Picture 1." It will be saved in PNG format. You can rename the file and change its format using "Preview" Photoshop, or other similar programs.

2.      Step 2

On a PC computer, press the "print screen" button on your keyboard. This will not automatically print the screen shot, but rather a copy of the screen shot will be save to your computer's clipboard. Open "Paint" and select the white area of a new file. Use the "control+V" command to paste the saved screen shot to your file. Save and rename the file in whatever format you prefer.

3.      Step 3

If you have Windows Vista installed on your computer, click on the start menu and do a search for the word "snip." The search will lead you to the "Snip" tool. Open the application. You will be given a choice to use a variety of methods to select the portion of your computer screen that you want to capture. Select the method that is most useful for your purposes. When you use the tool and outline/select and area of your screen, the image will be opened in the snip program for you to edit and save. The image will also be added to your computer's clipboard.
